DISTINGUISHING CY AND CFS

In today's era of globalization, the business of buying and selling is growing. In order to meet the buying and selling needs of domestic and foreign customers, enterprises, shippers and carriers must carry out a series of goods transportation activities. In particular, there is a very popular, widely used term that almost everyone interested in the field of logistics knows is CY. So what is CY? What's the difference between CY and CFS?   1. What is CY?

A Container yard located in an area within a seaport or dry port to store FCL Containers unloaded from cargo ships or to store Containers before being loaded onto ships.

For CY/CY shipments, the Shipper will pull the Container to drop off at the yard designated by the Shipping Line (above Booking confirmation).

The shipping company is responsible for this Container from the time it is unloaded at the port of loading (POL) yard, ready to be loaded onto the ship until unloaded at the designated Container yard at the port of discharge (POD).

The consignee/goods owner (Consignee) will carry out import procedures, pick up and pull the Container out of the yard and to their warehouse.

Regarding the symbol CY/CY, the first letter CY refers to the Container yard at the port of loading (POL), where the Shipping Line begins to take responsibility for the Container. The second letter CY refers to the Container yard at the port of discharge (POD) where the Shipping Line's responsibility ends when it completes the transportation and unloading of the Container to that yard.

Based on the contract of carriage with the customer and the port authority, some shipping lines may put the name of the loading port and/or discharge port on the bill of lading before the CY symbol.

  1. What is CFS?

Is a LCL cargo yard - a warehouse system where LCL shipments of different shippers (exporting or importing businesses) are consolidated (consolidated/grouped) before being exported or divided (deconsolidated/ degrouped) after import.

Depending on the retail shipment using the freight consolidation service of the Shipping Line or LCL Consolidator, operations will be different, specifically as follows:

For shipments that shippers hire shipping companies to provide LCL consolidation services, there will be many shippers. The shipping company will issue the Master Bill of Lading directly to these shippers. On the bill of lading, delivery conditions are shown as CFS/CFS. That means the shipping company's responsibility will begin at the CFS yard at the loading port and end at the CFS yard at the unloading port.

For shipments where the goods owner hires a retail consolidator, the bill of lading issued by the retail consolidator to the goods owner is a House Bill of Lading.

The bill of lading also shows delivery terms as CFS/CFS. That is, the responsibility of the LCL consolidator begins at the CFS yard at the loading port and ends at the CFS yard at the unloading port. In this case, the Shipping Line will issue a master bill of lading to the LCL consignor, with the delivery condition being CY/CY.
